Malaga Island,

Malaga Island Waves
An interracial fishing town off the coast of Maine, Malaga Island was an oasis for people escaping poverty to live as an extended family in a squatted, intentional community. The intense ire of the media and surrounding towns and islands towards a community that dared to “race mix”, be free, and seek autonomous living culminated when the governor declared the area unfit in 1911 to make way for growing commerce and tourism. Armed with the prevailing thought at the time-- little more than racist eugenics-- Maine allowed the people of Malaga to be split up, many interned at psychiatric hospitals, thus breaking up entire families.
